Many of us grew up with the idea of the component audio system. A receiver (or a separate preamplifier and amplifier), tuner (radio), record player, tape deck, and later on a CD player. If you were into more fancy stuff, you had a DAT or MiniDisc deck as well.

Resperate helps to cut down your blood pressure
One of the major risk factors for heart attacks and strokes is blood pressure, alternatively known as hypertension, which could be curbed through cutting down of salt intake and incorporating exercise regime into day-to-day life. This disorder for most people involves a cocktail of tablets and drugs, which cause several other side effects like tiredness, insomnia, cold hands and feet, dizziness and constipation. But no one ever thought of controlling blood pressure by means of slow breathing an
Saturday Guest Blogger: Marley Gibson!
Iâm so excited to have debut author, Marley Gibson, aka Kate Harmon, here today with us in the jungle. Iâve known Marley for a long time and she is one of the friendliest, bubbliest, smartest and entertaining people I know. Audiophile's dream come true
I'm not really sure if one can be an amateur audiophile (ie. I don't have the money for an insane stereo system) but I do prefer my music through a decent set of headphones. So needless to say I was amazed to realize that I can't audibly discern the difference between cd quality and an AAC file imported at 192kbps. I've either been blessed with some growing deafness or I've been underestimating technology these past 3 years. Why does this matter you ask? Because it has meant that I've been abl
Unable to use external speakers under Mandriva 2008.1 on Amilo Pi 2530
When I try to play any audio, the sound is produced by my internal laptop speakers, instead of my external speakers. When I go into KMix, I can see that the volume for Headphones (which I'm assuming is the line out of my sound card) is set to full and is not muted. When I use KMix to fiddle with the settings for my internal speakers, this works fine, but the settings for my external speakers have no effect. Under Windows XP, the use of my external speakers is regulated by a Realtek program. I

So lost in the sea, Your soul has encased me Took ahold of me, Never let me leave My hands in yours, Keep beggin me Whisper sweet nothings in my ear, Maybe tell me that you love me?... Are CBSâ Days as Public Company Numbered?
TheStreet.comâs Jim Cramer says CBS should go private (via SAI). Funny, I said that might be a good strategy for CBS, too, back in mid-April. Here is the summary of the argument: One way that no one will care about a) Performance or b) Les Moonves salary is if it were not publicly traded. Moreover, Wall Street is being unreasonable: yes the company is shrinking, but it will take time for digital revenues to grow, anyway. However, if someone came along and took CBS out at $20B, I think a lot of

I really love this version of "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" from the Scotch Mist webcast. It was cool to hear this tune @ Nissan, but I'm still bitter they played it instead of "There There." "All I Need" is pretty great too. I noticed the other day that I generally space out on this song when I listen to it on my headphones until they get to the end and the wall of sound bit comes in.

The routine's steps are displayed on a gauge located on the lower-right corner of the screen. As the beats are executed, your figh

Skullcandy Headphones: Models G.I. And Terje NINE

High Places Interview
I interviewed Brooklyn two-piece High Places via email a few weeks ago for New Zealand magazine Real Groove. Much Improved
Go. Profit from exile. To see, listen, walk, pause beside wisemen; question savages and madmen; and listen to stories. It is always pleasant and, sometimes, improves you. I have neglected the blog for most of the last few weeks because I have been busy. I have listened, walked, and paused beside the wise. Though I did not question savages and madmen, I did have an experience which I can only term as transformational. I had glimpses of instant satori. Putting that in words is obviously impossib
KC @ World Champs, 5/22
I got my $12 upper bleacher ticket to Thursday's weekday afternoon game back when the first tickets went on sale in November. Since you can't park at a metered spot for a weekday afternoon game, I drove to the $8 BU lot. It was a mostly gray, slightly chilly day with rainbow sprinkles. Click each for big-ness. Review: Skullcandy Skullcrusher headphones
Skullcandy is known for their quality headphones. Skullcandyâs Skullcrusher headphones are not new, but I wanted to give them a try and see what all the fuss was about. They donât have any sophisticated active noise canceling features, but still manage to drown out background noise with a nice level of bass rumbling and sheer over-powering volume. But hey, we all know with headphones itâs not about how well they look but how well they sound. And the 2200âs do have sound. Well, for innocent bystanders it's more like being on the business end of a loud blast. Here, let me explain. I listened to a little Sarah Vaughn at my desk this week and then turned around to
Nine Inch Nails âThe Slipâ (self-released 2008)
Nine Inch Nails âThe Slipâ (self-released 2008) Iâm sure you donât want to read this any more than I want to write it, but Iâll just come straight out and say it. The new Nine Inch Nails record is really, really good. Perspective first: I hate Nine Inch Nails. I have never liked this band, and while I would get along with Trent Reznor on a lot of copyright and music industry issues, I canât say I have ever cared for his songwriting or records one bit. But who can resist free? Reznor, sin

Macy's Launches Vending Machines for Electronics
Macy's department stores is announcing that they will be pushing out their electronics vending machines nearly chain-wide. They have been testing the machines in a few stores over the past year and apparently they have done very well. I've seen these machines in a variety of airports over the past couple of years as well. Macy's says the machines are loaded with, "products including iPods (Touch, Classic, Nano and Shuffle); Canon 7MP and 8MP digital cameras; Samsung 7MP digital camera and
Klipsch Releases Smallest and Lightest Full-Range Headphones...in Korea
Permalink Why I've Ditched Windows Media Player 11 And Switched to the Zune Software Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 01:00 PM Something interesting happened this month: after the Zune 2.5 software update was released, I started using it more to actually listen to music. Does that sound a bit strange? Previously I'd really only used it as synching software - meaning I'd load it up to push music, photos, and videos onto my Zune - but not much else. My Zune syncs wit
Cars (Part 3)
âOpulenceâ and âEleganceâ.  Two words that fit quite easily with âMercedesâ and âBenzâ.  Unfortunately for them, âover-indulgenceâ and âexpensiveâ also come to mind. This can be seen in lots of places in their line up, but no more so then in their Maybach 62.  Maybach started in 1902 as a luxury motor company in Germany. They made competitors to Rolls Royceâs, but werenât anywhere near as successful, as evidenced by the fact that you probably had never heard of them until Top Gear
Review: LG KF600
The LG KF600 is a modern, stylish slide phone, following on from LGs Chocolate with an adaptive touchscreen navigation and control system taking up a third of the screen area. Other features include Bluetooth 2, supporting A2DP, which is the current standard for Bluetooth stereo audio; a 3.0 Megapixel camera; and a Micro SD slot inside the phone, which inconveniently requires the battery to be removed. Overall, the KF600 is a very usable phone. I recently used it for a week, and found it the

Gear4 StreetWear Hoody for Your 3rd Gen iPod Nano
You know, I figured that if a lot of people show the propensity to dress up their pets, a lot are also bound to be open to the idea of dressing up their iPods. Wouldn't it be great if you can coordinate outfits with your favorite gadget too? And, if you have a certain predilection for urban fashion, this mini hoody for your iPod would definitely look appealing. Designed specifically for the 3rd Gen iPod Nano, the Gear4 StreetWear mimics a real hoody sweatshirt complete with a drawstring hood

Three Pink Bubble Gums
I know I donât do many gum reviews, I donât consider myself a great connoisseur of the stuff. Iâm perfectly happy with good old Peppermint Chiklets. But the All Candy Expo box included about 25 packages of gum, here are three that caught my attention: Glee Gum Bubblegum Flavor: The natural pink coloring here is from beets and I canât think of a more lovely way for a beet to be displayed. A Band Trip. And MIssing Stuff.
R. left on a band trip to Saskatoon this morning. And he was pretty excited to go. He's 13 so it's time he learned some independence away from home and these field trips are great ways for him to learn to make his way through the world. They're bussing to Saskatoon, playing a concert and then doing lunch and some shopping at the mall (Mid-Town?). I sent $40 with him, which sounds like a lot for lunch and dinner. And it probably will be lots. Unless he decides he needs to buy a Wii game before di
The Grass is Always Greener (and Longer) in the Backyard
I hate mowing. Always have. I'm beginning to think that Dad may have been serious when I used to ask him why he didn't mow the lawn and he'd reply, "why do you think I had kids?" I know the Man'O'The House is supposed to be out putzing around the yard - mowing, raking, edging, fertilizing, watering, obsessing over dead patches, etc. - but I don't get it. Once I'm out there - sweating like a prize hog at the fair, allergies raging - I just fantasize about flagging down a cement truck and paving

How To: Not Kill the Annoying Loud Talkers in Your Office
Sick and tired of hearing people chatter about shit that has nothing to do with whatever youâre actually doing? Yeah, me too. Top Chef Episode 11: Oh, The Humanity!
We'd like to start this week out with a sighting: a friend of ours just saw last week's eliminee Andrew air-drumming really hard to music on his headphones (or maybe just in his head?) on the subway in New York. Of course he was. You thought that spazziness was just an act? To the show. It's pretty easy to imagine that Tom Colicchio, in another life, was an experienced thief; who's ever looked more natural breaking and entering in the pre-dawn hours? Anyway, the cheftestants were woken up earl
Nerdcore Rising - MC Frontalot and the Nerdcore movement
One of my favorite genres of music is "nerdcore", which is basically rap music done by nerds/gamers and contains many references to technology, games and computer code. There is a movie called "Nerdcore Rising" which follows this underground scene and sheds light on a rising tsunami of nerd culture that I am, quite frankly, most comfortable in. I would love to see this and need to figure out how to get a screening here in NoVA. Here is the video trailer for the movie but you may not want to se
Failed quest for 'Daughters of Iraq'
For an embed set up to investigate a new breed of Iraqi female guard it was a complete disaster. But fortunately, thanks to an amusing helicopter crew and some friendly soldiers on the ground, the trip was not an utter waste of time. In fact, things got off to a promising start. When it happened, en route to a place called the Triangle of Death, I was hardly going

Technophile: Noise-reducing headphones (Guardian Unlimited)
Technology is responsible for most of the world's noise pollution; planes, cars, amplified music and sirens are the uninvited soundtrack to modern living. Perhaps noise-reducing headphones are technology's way of redressing the balance. This is how they work: each earpiece features a mini-microphone that picks up the ambient noise (next door's barking dog, the roadworks outside your front ...
Sony MDR-AS50G Headphones Review
"Sony has a winner with its MDR-AS50G sport headphones: They're lightweight, they fit securely, and they sound good indoors and outside. Their in-ear design is definitely geared towards fitness nuts rather than commuters; they don't block out a whole lot of sound, which could be a plus or a minus depending on where you work out. The low price ($49.99 USD) is a big plus, since we tend to burn through exercise headphones faster than we burn through calories." __________ Source: Digital Trends

A thought of appearance

Now to annoy mum with these at high volume when she wants my attention lol ;)
Mozart and Medicine
Mozart and Medicine Category: There are lots of ways to combine science and art. Some of them are more problematic than others: One of the strangest exhibits at the opening of "Design and the Elastic Mind," the very strange show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York that explores the territory where design meets science, was a teeny coat made out of living mouse stem cells. The "victimless leather" was kept alive in an incubator with nutrients, unsettlingly alive. Until recently, that is.

Iâve heard most PPC experts recommend you test headlines first, because they are most visible and are believed to influence click through rate more than body copy (because people have a tendency not to read things if they donât have to). But Iâm going to go against the gurus and suggest how you could test offers and value propositions first, using a
Grado RA1 Headphone Amp
A lot of us need to have headphones in order to listen to music; either we work in an environment that doesn't support louder music or we just want that in-your-ear closeness for deep focus. With the advent of compressed music and extreme portability, it is unfortunately getting harder and harder to find high fidelity out there. Thanks to the folks at Grado in Brooklyn, NY (They were there before you had to prefix the word "Brooklyn" onto things to make them cool.), we have a nice solution that
SMX Madrid - The Programmble Social Web
Right. I've found some (weak) wi-fi and a set of translation headphones (currently buzzing in my ear) so I'm going to see whether I can do some live blogging from SMX Madrid. It's 1 o'clock Madrdid time and next up is Eric Tholome from Google. He's the Group Product Manager, Applications there and I think he's going to be talking about open social. The title of the presentation is "The Programmable Social Web". He looks to have at least 7 slides - which is loads for a Googler in a search confer

Mike Savage of right wing radio ADMITS HEâS GAY while mocking Sen. Ted Kennedyâs illness

Right wingers try for years to hide their homosexuality and wonât say a word until one dayâ¦theyâre tapping their feet in an airport stall for a $20 blowjob and the rest is history! The Solar Energy Purse keeps your gadgets going
It seems like solar gadgets are popping up like daisies anymore. Well here is one slightly more fashionable gem, that allows for you to charge up your little gadgets on the go. Even when it isnât in direct sunlight it has a battery it can run off of. The bag was designed by Ennio Capasa, who happens to feature it on one of those designer sites that makes you want to rip your hair out. Excessively busy, yet with minimal information. 10 Commandments of Airplane Etiquette - Part 1 of 2
The following post has nothing to do with security but should serve as a reminder if youâre traveling to a security conference or meeting in the near future: 1) Thou shalt not plan to go to the bathroom (especially Number 2) on the plane instead of taking the time to go at the airport prior to boarding. Come on peopleâ¦itâs really not that nice a place to go to the bathroom. Itâs small, itâs cramped, and it smells funny. They have bathrooms at terminal for a reason. There is nothing worse th
Stogie Tips: Listening In and Lighting Up
Iâm not big on fancy cigar smoking accoutrements. Remember, Iâm the guy who extols the virtues of the sub-$4 Ronson torch lighter filled with cheap Ronson butane. But a few months ago I bought myself what I thought had the potential to be a great addition. I picked up a set of Sennheiser wireless headphones. I got the package for about $60 on sale at the same electronics store where I had earlier purchased my TV and sound system. These arenât the top of the line model; they donât reproduce su
New Music Fucking Bores Me at the Moment
Thereâs so much perfectly decent music in my inbox at the moment, that I find it hard to write about any of it. Yeah, you know, ho hum, itâs all pretty decent but none is blowing me away. Islandsâ Armâs Way is pretty decent, Bon Iverâs album For Emma, Forever Ago isnât bad either, but I honestly donât find it quite as brilliant as almost everyone else seems to. The new albums by Half Man Half Biscuit and even The Wave Pictures are both pretty good but just not awakening much passion Iâm a
Nokia XpressMusic 5310 lands on T-Mobile USA
Previously we thought T-Mobile will release the Nokia XpressMusic 5310 music phone in June, but the Deutsche Telekom-owner mobile operator surprised us today. That's a good news, so I won't rant much about it. The 9.9mm thin handset is designed for those that want to merge their mobile phone with a digital music player. All components needed are there â" including a decent media playback software, QVGA screen, microSD slot, Bluetooth (in case you want to use some wireless headphones), and of
Flickr Finds: Audiophile's Shrinking Environment
Sometimes smaller truly is better. Since the move from a much larger surface, audiophile and Apple aficionado Rhiannon Floyd has nothing but good things to say about having a more compact workspace. "I'm actually finding it spacious enough for my needs, whilst saving a lot of space." More shots of her desktop after the jump. Accessories we can immediately point out are the Lexicon audio amp, a Wooaudio headphone stand, and a nice set of Audio-Technica AD700 headphones. Photos courtesy of Rhiann
T-Mobile gets Nokia's XpressMusic 5310
Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE T-Mobile's no stranger to Nokia's XpressMusic series of funky little music phones, and the tradition continues today with the introduction of the 5310. This colorful candybar has some pretty solid street cred as a viable music player, too, with a microSD slot, svelte 9.9mm body and -- most importantly -- a real 3.5mm jack for the headphones of your choosing. You've also got a 2 megapixel camera and a QVGA display to play with, both of which'll
"That means all of you have to be nice to Clinton supporters." -Barack Obama
This evening, I met with the Clinton staff in Missoula and other volunteers to watch results come in from Kentucky. Most of the time, when I attend a Hillary function, I wear a Hillary t-shirt, button, or sticker. Most of the time, when I'm walking to or from the office, I'm shouted at and harassed from cars, porches, on the street, whatever. Today was no different. As I was walking home, in downtown Missoula, in broad daylight, someone wearing three Obama buttons on their shirt followed m
Monday & Tuesday...
http://maxhedrm.montebellopark.com/Galleries/v/Travels/NYC2008/0520/ Monday was pretty uneventful. I wandered in to Manhattan to pick up the key from Craig, and for the most part hung around his apartment a bit. For dinner we went to Purity Diner. It was ok, but the hot chocolate was weak, the tuna salad was dry & the pie was cold. The onion rings were ok though. On Tuesday I did a bit more. I rode in to Manhattan & dropped something off with Craig, then met Sergei (Craigâs friend that
Getting Reacquainted with an Old Friend
Lately Iâve been working at getting back into shape after having my fourth and final baby. I mean I know that Iâm nursing and that itâs been less than three months and that eventually Iâll settle back into a reasonable size - but this time around, Iâm not feeling satisfied with only that. I think the knowledge that Iâll never again get pregnant and that from here on out my body is MINE - that I feel like it is time to make it the body that I feel happy with! 4 weeks ago, I started weight watch
Handled
A few weeks ago, I had a fitness epiphany. I met up with some friends who told me some things, in ways both implied and specific, that pissed me off in ways I hadnât been pissed off in years. Iâm not going to mince words here. Over the course of the past two years, for a variety of reasons, Iâve turned myself into a pussy. I havenât been doing any of the things I know I need to do in order to make progress. I was eating like shit, training like a little girl, and deluding myself into thinking

Deadline Couriers
OK, this is old, from last year, but Iâve never seen it before. Album review: Santogold's must-hear debut

Writers' Wednesday - The Write Place
Our Trish has gone missing somewhere between Lincoln, where we were on a Mills & Boon Panel, and Middlesborough. Since it is possible she can't get an internet connection and has lost her mobile I'm not going to worry about her until Thursday night. If she isn't back in Ireland then it'll mean I have to do 'my' Film on Friday post. So, it's me, Natasha. Again. Actually, I think, this may well be the start of a series because creating the perfect creative space is a knotty writers' problem.
Mike Farrell: Another Journey: Days 5 - 10
DAY FIVE -- Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Today was a dream -- the first part almost literally. After spending the evening catching up with Bobby and Eugenie -- both are successful writer/producers in television and longtime friends who come to their gorgeous Santa Fe "getaway" as often as they can -- I turn in kind of late, only to awaken with a start at the thought that I might have forgotten a radio interview scheduled for the first thing in the morning. Leaping out of bed to check the multi-page

Obviously, itâs a great deal to a womanâs heart, too. Including my own. I need to vent. After this morning, I had a rough day. The middle wasnât so bad. I did some PvP with my guildmates (friends), I watched two episodes of House with Matt, ate a yummy dinner, started a new neighbourhood in The Sims 2⦠The day was

Dangers of headphones raised after B.C. student killed by helicopter (Telegraph-Journal)
The death of a 23-year-old student killed when a helicopter crash-landed on him in the middle of the street is raising questions about how aware people are of their surroundings when outside listening to portable audio devices - such as Ipods and MP3 players.
Sub-$50 Headphones (AskMen)
New headphones are my No. 1 recommendation to anyone who wants to get the most out of their new MP3 player (except for those who decided to go with the Sony NWZ-A810 series.) Straight up: Those janky, plastic earbuds that came with your player aren't doing you any favors.

Scandyna Micropod SE Active Speaker Review
I think Iâve said it before, but if I didnât, here it is again: Speaker arenât easy to review and are in fact extremely subjective. I donât use any type of technical measurement to see what the Hz range is, or if the signal-to-noise ratio is up to snuff. Nope, I just listen to them, play with the plugs, etc, and give my real world opinion. How do they sound? The Scandyna Mircopods sounds good, but fall short when it comes to any level of bass. With that said, they achieve great highs for a

Improving your business travel experience
I travel. A lot. Community work (whether as a community manager or consultant) has kept me moving around the globe pretty frequently. My family asks me regularly how I keep sane when I spend so much time dealing with hotels, airport security, weary travelers, and airline seats. Good. Damn. Question. Iâve developed some tips and tricks over the years that really help improve my experience and may help you as well. Mileage may vary since everyone travels differently. (Iâve blogged about this
Public Media Strategy - Draft

Wild Card Tour: Finding Hollywood Nobody by Lisa Samson
My Take: Seldom are there authors that grab my attention as well as Lisa Samson. I adore the Hollywood Nobody series. It is just plain fun reading!!! My husband and 12 year old son even love this series! That's saying something when a kid who lives and breaths sci-fi and fantasy can't put down a teen chick lit book! Quirky, funny, down-to-earth Scotty will be one of my favorite characters of all time. She is just so squeezably cute! I could follow this series forever...I hope it never ends.
Review: Plantronics Pulsar P590E Bluetooth Stereo Headphones
Have you ever wished that your MP3 player, Gameboy, or DVD player had BlueTooth (BT) so you could use a BT wireless stereo headset with it? I know I have. I first just originally wanted to review the Plantronics P590 Bluetooth (BT) stereo headset to use with my Sprint PPC-6800, but soon realized that the P590 can add BT capabilities to anything that has a standard sized earphone jack! Plantronics did not hold back with throwing in more extras in the box than I have ever seen, let alone woul

M6 SL headphone socket broken
Hi, 6 weeks ago I bought an M6 SL, and it worked fine. But after a few days, the headphone socket started to fail. The right audio channel would go silent, and after I wiggled the jack around a bit the sound came back. The sound would go away every time I moved the jack. This got worse, so I decided to RMA my player. I got it back 6 weeks later (I think they sent me a new one), and this one works fine. I used Sennheiser PMX 60 headphones with the player, but the original earphones behaved in
