GEAR & GADGETS (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

The choices for privately listening to portable electronic devices and talking on cell phones range from cushy, but bulky, padded folding headphones that cover the ears to tiny ear buds that can fall out if not plugged deeply (and sometimes uncomfortably) into place.

Cell Phone Speakers (AskMen)

Though the idea of tiny cell phone speakers may seem a bit strange to you, we advise you to reconsider. As far as we're concerned, they're some of the coolest cell phone accessories around. Just pair them with a snazzy music phone and you can share your tunes with the world.

Writing Roots: Learning Shakespearese

By Christina Katz Remember when you were in high school, probably a freshman, and you were introduced to the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet? How many of you dutifully toted home your Shakespeare readers and tried to puzzle through the iambic pentameter and other poetic meters? Well, I don’t know about you, but I didn’t know what the heck this Shakespeare fella was trying to say, which only made all the hoopla about how great he was more frustrating. Through the remaining four years of

The funniest thing I’ve seen in ages

Thanks, Bol.  Definitely NSFW on the sound, so just put on some headphones. Here’s the funniest part â€" this dude must have been deep in the country, cuz it ain’t like he just moved to town from New York City.  Once that bug got in his mouth, he started talking like Bundini Brown’s cousin from Down South.  I just wonder what else happened that day, for this explosion had built.  This was not spontaneous combustion.

The Revolving Door Of Expenses

As I sat down to start writing this evening the wife alerted me to the fact that our digital thermostat in the bedroom (the one that cools this side of the house) had no display. We dicked around with it a little bit, finding out that while we can still turn the fan on and leave it on, which will probably keep the nights bearable, but there's no other use for this thing over the weekend. This is starting to feel typical of late, as we found out last weekend that our water heater in the same clos

Video: Teen Brutally Beats Bus Passenger for iPhone [Iphone Attack] Friday, 20 June 2008 4:17 P GMT-06 As reported from an NBC affiliate, this surveillance video (from May 21st) has just been released that depicts a particularly vicious attack on a Columbus, OH, busâ€"all to acquire an iPhone. A hooded teen lunges at a man who was wearing headphones on his way off the bus. No one did anything to stop the attack (not that you can blame a woman with child for not stepping in). Surprisingly, despit

Butt Be Gone!

Today was a weird day. I got up, and got ready...took my daughter to her summer school classes, came home, drank coffee, took animal pictures and edited and posted them on my other blog along with a written post. Took a quick shower, picked up my daughter, realized that it was after noon and I was hungry. I wanted to eat my favorite cereal (and I haven't eaten any cereal for quite a while) but the milk was gone. I looked at the clock and did a quick calculation. It was payday...which meant some

Bus passenger beaten, all in an attempt to steal his iPhone

Its a sick, sick world when you consider that someone could choose to beat someone over an iPhone. In this case a man was on a bus, he was sitting towards the front, minding his business and listening to his headphones. Well it seems that was just a little to much temptation for this teen, [...]

The Obama Seal debuts. The Weekly Standard says it might be illegal. Well, it's definitely lame. (And shouldn't the eagle have wiretap headphones on, in light of Obama's recent cave?) The Obama campaign probably should've stuck with a version of this. The Ramones, as always, show us how it's done (see right). Did the Feds ever pressure them about their seal? Last year, Michelle Malkin imagined what an Obama-approved presidential seal might look like. She was outraged that Obama stopped weari

Take a Chance on Me

ABBA - Take a Chance on Me (1978, 9.9MB, 3:55) I have an unnatural obsession with ABBA, and thankfully, Doron already posted one of their classic and amazing music videos. Let’s break this one down a little, though it’s clearly enjoyable without my commentary. First off, the ABBA couples broke up, but at least they didn’t go the way of my favorite stateside 70’s quartet, Fleetwood Mac. No reason to partner-swap, folks. Anni-Frid (Frida - the brunette) tends to be my favorite. In thi

Naomi Campbell: 200 Hours Community Service

The diva supermodel, Naomi Campbell, has been sentenced to 200 hours of community service after her guilty plea for an airport outburst. (Remember? She went psycho because her bags went missing and two police officers had to escort her off a plane at Heathrow Airport on April 3rd.) But hey, if you thought that wasn’t a stiff enough fine, don’t worry. Campbell also had to pay $400 to the police officers she attacked, $300 big ones to the captain of the flight she interrupted and $4,600 to the

Packing light for my summer trip

Everything for Europe and at least 3 conferences has to fit inside two backpacks, one big and one small daypack! Help me out with some advice! I was inspired by the Own 100 Things idea and various "packing light" sites including onebag.com. I'll be in three cities: London, Brussels, and Budapest. I'm headed out on a starter vacay tomorrow -- I really should be packing and not playing around. Bobbie Johnson: Gadget clinic (Guardian Unlimited)

I want to find a way of connecting my laptop to my stereo without wires. Is there a sort of Bluetooth device that can let me do this? The options here are legion. Sony's awkwardly named HWS-BTA2W Bluetooth system, around £60, lets ...

Orderly fashion

On my flight from Toronto to Chicago this morning, a guy got on the plane, sat next to me and took out his ipod and started watching a cartoon on it. He watches it while people take their seats and get settled. No problem. Then the announcement to turn off all electronic things comes, and he totally ignores it. I assume he didn't hear, what with the headphones. The flight attendant comes by twice, but somehow misses that he's still watching his video, and we begin to back up from the jetway. F

Is It Tatum Or...?

In the 1970s, Red Garland told me about the pianists who influenced him when he was learning. He mentioned Nat Cole, James P. Johnson, Luckey Roberts, Teddy Wilson and Bud Powell. Then he said, Tatum, of course was the master. He was Mr. Piano. The first time I heard a Tatum record--I think it was "Tiger Rag"--I thought it was at least three pianists. Garland was far from the only listener who was convinced that Art Tatum's 1933 recording of "Tiger Rag" was the work of more than one pianist

Patapon

Patapon takes a real-time strategy game, but instead of using a menu to select the actions of your characters, you tell them what to do by beating out a drum pattern. There are different patterns to tell your “Patapons” to do different actions. Square Square Square Circle is the command to move forward, whereas Circle Circle Square Circle is the command to attack. It sounds much easier than it is.  There is a background beat going on in the game, and you need to keep the pace. You must hit th

On meeting childhood heros

You know how they say you should never meet your childhood heros when you're all grown up because they will disappoint? They have a point. Except, that is, if you're hero is Bruce Springsteen. In which case that theory is utter bollocks. I fell in love with Bruce Springsteen in 1985, lying on my tummy on my aunt and uncle's bed, watching MTV on their telly in the bedroom (what a luxury, a telly in the bedroom!). We didn't have cable then, so watching MTV on a TV in a bedroom was the height o

BudFits Make Your Earbuds Less Fall-Outy

If your iPod doubles as a workout accessory, you've no doubt experienced the annoyance of a set of earbuds that just won't stay put. You could shell out the cash for a new pair of exercise headphones--or if you're attached to Apple's subpar earbuds, you can pick up a pair of Innovelis's BudFits. ARE THOSE SHURE HEADPHONES?

I’ve never had Shure headphones but I had a pair of Ultimate Ears once. They were pretty nice but I could never get a good fit. You wouldn’t think someone so hot would have such narrow ear canals but I do. Yesterday the paparazzi caught up with Steve Gutenberg in New York and they seemed to ask how he liked his pair. Then he uses his middle finger to point upwards, as if to say, “These? Yes I enjoy them quite a bit, thank you for asking.” Then he got closer so the photographers could list

We can do this thanks to our clever brains, which know what our ears and head are shaped like and use that information to decipher the locations of sounds which are heard slightly diffe

Disney: Hannah Montana, Camp Rock Music/Tech Toys

Disney was in town to preview some of the new toys you'll see for the 2008 holiday season. And I was thrilled to see the brand-new Hannah toys. Most were music-oriented, of course; joining last year's wonderful--and real--Hannah Montana Guitar are the Pocket Amp, that lets you can play your guitar and listen without anyone else hearing; the Disney Vocal Training Kit, including a light-up mic, cable, stand, clip, and bag; and the Pop Tour Guitar, kind of a Guitar Hero for younger girls. Video Editing Update

I finally learned how to use non-linear video editing software... I had tried to figure it out last January but after a couple of hours of not understanding how to isolate sections of a large file, I gave up. In early March, defeated, I bought a book on Amazon called Classroom in a Book: Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0. I had flipped through it at a bookstore and it looked broken down and thorough, like the material I received back in the late 90s when I was a programmer and took a bunch of week-long Or

Couple of questions for all M6 SL owners...

Hi all, I'm thinking of passing my M3 to the wife and buying an M6SL for myself but I have a couple of questions for all M6SL owners out there. 1. I often use the M3's onboard mic to record speeches but the M3's mic and/or circuitry puts a low-level electrical background buzz/hiss on all recorded files. It's not overbearing but can be annoying on recordings with low voice levels. Can someone tell me if the M6SL is the same or is its voice recording cleaner? If someone could compare the M3

Oh, They Rocked It, All Right

A couple of months ago, when David and I went to Los Angeles for his best friend Todd’s wedding, we were a little worried. Or maybe “worried” is too strong of a word. “Concerned” is probably more accurate. Because for the two weeks leading up to the wedding, Todd was super-stressed out. JavaScript doesn’t suck. I’ve been looking at SproutCore and I really like it a lot. I’ll probably be using it for future web applications. Lots of cool stuff is being written in Ruby. I really need to start learning it. iPhone push notification is no substitute for background tasks. It still isn’t possible to schedule something to happen at a particular time. Apple just considered one very specific use case, where something like AIM needs to notify you that a message has been received. Yo

Who Is Adam Carolla? [Top Gear USA]

As part of our coverage of the announcement of the Top Gear USA pilot, we've put together a special feature on each of the three co-hosts. Believe it or not, Adam Carolla might actually know something about cars. Good thing, especially since he's going to be one of a trio of Top Gear USA hosts. Will his unenthusiastic enthusiasm help carry Top Gear to new and more 'merican heights, like Steve Carrell did with The Office? To better answer that question we look to his curriculum vitae below the j

Dubai to Heathrow, and I have nothing witty - Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Jump to the full entry & travel map Dubai, United Arab Emirates I managed to sleep on the flight to Dubai, which was good because I was starting to look so sickly cabin staff were asking if I was okay. I also managed to sleep through yet another awful in-flight movie. Dubai is absolutely terrafying; both the city and the airport. It was night so everything was lit up and you could see the layout of all the roads and houses. It is a city designed by a sim-city style creator, with a cooki

iPodding once again

iPodding once again Published by Karlin under Apple I just got a new black classic iPod to replace my very old white classic iPod â€" so old that it has a manual raised circular dial, not a flat touch dial. I still think the old raised dial is a superior piece of design â€" a really beautiful object. It had a 10 gb drive which I thought was enormous at the time! It still works but needs to be recharged more frequently and the screen sometimes goes glitchy and it also sometimes brings up the wr

Why I'm upgrading to a 3G iPhone

This morning John Gruber wrote a nice article on whether or not to upgrade to a 3G iPhone. I found it interesting that while I'm going to upgrade, it's not primarily for any of the reasons he mentions. While 3G, a new design, and GPS are great to have, they're not enough to get me to upgrade the iPhone I waited in line for on day one, but I'm getting one anyway, for far more boring reasons: the flush headphone jack and 16 gigs. Sure there's currently an iPhone out there with 16 gigs, but it

One Day

There’s nothing quite like rolling out of bed early on a glorious morning here in the Northwest â€" and I really can’t emphasize “glorious” enough, even with HTML â€" knowing that I won’t roll back in for 24 hours. It shall be an interesting week. I will be awake for most of it, so I can blog and stuff. For what it’s worth, Father’s Day was pretty good too. More sunshine, and some random work that made me feel worthwhile and not sluggish at all for sitting at the computer for a few hours; if you’r

5 days in Cannes, 5 days of judging the best Cyber work in the world??? and I must say, it???s quit an experience. I???m not going to bore you with all my stories how tough it is and how I just can not enjoy the good weather over here. Let me just talk about the good stuff. 5 pieces of great work in 5 different categories. But not the ones of the big famous agencies. I hope they will surprise you as much as they surprised me. And I hope they all win some metal. I???ll know tomorrow, you???ll k

Movie-based game is more of an 'Iron' dud (The Buffalo News)

Yet another hapless movie-based game, “Iron Man,” raises the question: What the heck happened to Sega? The company, once revered for innovative, progressive game software, as well as a rather long stint as a game hardware titan, seems intent these days on publishing titles of the “easy money” kind, i. e., Hollywood blockbuster tie-ins with spectacular cover art designed to move a few hundred ...

So You Think You Can Dance?: PET Scans Reveal Your Brain's Inner Choreography [Scientific American Magazine] (Scientific American)

So natural is our capacity for rhythm that most of us take it for granted: when we hear music, we tap our feet to the beat or rock and sway, often unaware that we are even moving. But this instinct is, for all intents and purposes, an evolutionary novelty among humans. Nothing comparable occurs in other mammals nor probably elsewhere in the animal kingdom. Our talent for unconscious entrainment ...
